so erin, what do you do?

What I am doing? This question comes up a lot amongst family and friends who don’t make much of an effort to come see me in Newcastle. It’s like being in a time warp. Whenever I go home my mother still assumes I don’t know how to use a washing machine, even though I was the first to move out and I’m the youngest too. Adam only just moved out and he’s 25. I was 18. so that’s a 7 year difference.

Above all I spend most of my time at TAFE. I am in the second year of a fine arts diploma. My majors are photography and sculpture. I also study life drawing, digital media, gen. drawing and some history. I go to TAFE five days a week, 31 hours a week.

I also volunteer with ACON and Newcastle youth service. I facilitate a under 25s queer drop in every fortnight. We have about ten people coming but it’s growing every week. We do fun stuff, workshops, and also info sessions on different stuff including homophobia, drugs etc.
Sometimes I look after kids sometimes during the lesbian parenting group. They are really awesome kids.
I am also organising the Queer youth art exhibition as part of the rainbow visions festival 2005. I organised it last year too and we had about 11 entrants. This year we have a bigger exhibition space, sponsored exhibitions prizes and a bit more knowledge of how to pull it off.
Oh and I’ve done a bit of photography and design work for ACON as well.

I have a badge maker and have been making badges with my own hand drawn designs on them. I’ve sold a lot to friends already but am also selling them in a shop call Ramjet which has two stores – darby st and the junction.

The Newcastle regional art gallery has also asked me to make up badges with details from works for upcoming exhibitions.

Oh, and I had a job interview yesterday which is promising.

Other side projects include a friends cd cover design, a bird feeder and gardening.

I’ve also been with my girlfriend, lisa, for over a year – not that it rates much with my parents. They don’t really talk to her when they visit and don’t ever ask how she is when they phone. She doesn't compare to susan and mark... Nan asks though, she is happy that I’ve found someone to share my life with. I love nan.
